Educational Applications of technology

Margarita Tovar-Tamez's Applications of Technology Examples

Picture
I am a Pre-K Dual Language teacher and Dual Language Coordinator in the seventh largest district in the country, Houston Independent School District. I chose HISD because of it's diversity of students and educators. I am also enrolled in Houston Baptist University, pursuing  a masters in Educational Administration. HBU has equipped me with the best skills to be a proficient leader in the education world.

I don't have a philosophy on education, but a philosophy on educators. I believe that educators are what make education the wonderful gift it is. Without efficient, dedicated and passionate educators, students are not taken to their highest capacity. We as educators must develop students that are capable, confident and thoroughly prepared for school and life success. Every student deserves a competent teacher and the only way to receive that is by us being life-long learners.

Texas Technology Educator Standards

Standard I. All teachers use technology-related terms, concepts, data input strategies, and ethical practices to make informed decisions about current technologies and their applications.

Standard II. All teachers identify task requirements, apply search strategies, and use current technology to efficiently acquire, analyze, and evaluate a variety of electronic information.

Standard III. All teachers use task-appropriate tools to synthesize knowledge, create and modify solutions, and evaluate results in a way that supports the work of individuals and groups in problem-solving situations.

Standard IV. All teachers communicate information in different formats and for diverse audiences.

Standard V. All teachers know how to plan, organize, deliver, and evaluate instruction for all students that incorporates the effective use of current technology for teaching and integrating the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) into the curriculum.

The Treasure Hunt is a great tool for students because it gives them a thorough set of resources selected by me. In todays search engines, it is very easy to get overwhealmed with massive amounts of information, the Treasure Hunt efficiently helps students stay in the right track. It demonstrates competency of Standard V because as a teacher we must be able to plan, organize and deliver (via Treasure Hunt) instruction for all students.

The Technology Rich Unit Plan is a fantastic method of delivering instruction. It demonstrates competency of Standard V because educators should be proficient delivering instruction through multiple methods. This lesson plan incorporates several enriching opportunities for students to demonstrate learning through multiple assessments.

The Collage reflecting our personal journey is not only a great tool for teachers but for students as well. Collage making demonstrates competency of Standard IV. because it delivers information through multiple formats for diverse student needs. Some students are not good expressing themselves orally, the collage making process allows visual learners to demonstrate their abilities to communicate.

The Copyright Presentation using Powtoon served as a great method of learning for me personally. Not only did I learn how to use a new video editing tool, but I learned specific things about Copyright. This presentation demonstrates competency of Standard I because teachers use technology-related terms and ethical practices to make informed decisions about current technologies and applications.

Creating this 2.0 web tool tutorial was so exciting for me as an educator. Teachers should not only teach their students, but be able to deliver information to other educators as well. This tutorial demonstrates competency of Standard IV. by delivering information through multiple methods not only to learners but fellow educators too.

If there is an artifact that demonstrates competency of Standard V. it is this one! Creating a TEASE not only shows competence of delivering information, but it demonstrates organizational skills and effective use of technology in the classroom. Students love watching videos on YouTube, how exciting to be able to hear your teacher's voice on a video while still learning!

Creating this graph demonstrates competency of Standard I. because educators must be able to efficiently use technology for data input strategies and concepts. Every educator should be familiar with the basic practices of Excel.
